Well, I did not know any of the words till I got the CD so since I first heard the songs I have known the words to them but in Clouds I still hear him say "falling through your clouds I hope you don't catch me"

in "Hold On" I didn't know it said this: All the eyes of tears you cry, Beautifully they stain your face I thought it said "all the hours of tears you cry, beautifully they stain your face", AND I kept expecting him to say "eyes" in place of "face." you were right the first time deary...it says, and I quote 'and all the hours of tears you cry, beautifully they stain your face'

luvinmarti Thanks ... when I was making the post I didn't feel like going out to my car to get the cd/lyrics, and had found those online. But, still, every time I listen to it, I expect him to say "beautifully they stain your eyes" .. just my brain expects it to rhyme there I guess~

OK, Not sure if this it the right thread for this! But, I hunted around the boards here for any other posts on this question, haven't found one, so decided it fell best under this topic! What does the song 'Straight as an Arrow' mean to you? The lyrics? Husband and I are having a debate over this....we both LOVE THE SONG! IT SHREADS!!! But we are always laughing about what it's really about! What is it about to you?

Straight As An Arrow is my all-around favorite song, if I had to choose just one... I hear this story in it: He is straight as an arrow, she is not, meaning, he lives by the rules.. "I can never leave you alone" either means he can't stay away from her and keeps going back for more abuse, or she can't be trusted--haven't decided which, maybe it's word play so you'll think either one... "See the pretty face kisses like a handshake" means to me that you can't judge anything by someone's looks... "What about me? So what - so what" sounds like the exchange between two people arguing... "La la la la la"...is either someone with their fingers in their ears ignoring the pleas for change, or the on and on monotony of a sick dance between two people (like walking along, hands in pockets whistling and oblivious to the havoc being created.) Would really love to hear other's opinions on these lyrics... So am I closer to your husband or you??

Awesome breakdown of the lyrics! I think you are closer to my husband's version tho! Mine has to do with a guy who is "straight" as an arrow meaning he's only into hetero relationships and is sweet/honest, and a girl who is "bent" a little more than that!..and into both guy-girl and girl-girl or some other kinky combo! "Hybrid Sexuality" is the tip to me for this theory. So, with that as the premise, in my sick mind!, I look at it being the tale of a guy who is drawn to a girl who is a much different than he is, and he is trying to get "the hell out"! But then there is the part about "hide her prescription papers" and I think it might have to do with birth control, like she tried to trick him into thinking a baby was his? "Got a bomb in her belly and she carried me"...she carried him into thinking it was his? I don't know! We LOVE the song! It seems to about something interesting!...wish we knew the true story! I read where Dino said it was his favorite and also he said "because of where it came from"...so maybe he has the answers!! Dino HELP! Can't wait to hear more theories!

I always thought it was kind of like some people give out kisses like handshakes. My feeling was the other person being talked about was kissin' on people and saying it wasn't a big deal, but it was to the other person in the relationship.

I totally agree with you about 'kiss is like a handshake'...she gives them out like they are nothing special. So he asks "what about me?" What does "Got eyes in the back of my head, and I know what you did" refer to.....?? I'm thinking it's about the prescription papers!

Wow! This discussion of the Staright as an Arrow lyrics is really DEEP. I vaguely remember a discussion about this going way back. I remember the "bomb in the belly" part being thought of as a pregnancy. Maybe the "bomb" is "surprise it's yours." What does "lost control at 23" mean?? I always thought "See the pretty face kiss is like a handshake" meant that even though she's pretty and comes across as attractive her kiss is like a cold fish.

Lines I got wrong? Oh, this'll be fun and not at all embarassing , lol. Well, the one that comes to mind now (cause sometimes I still sing it wrong) is the Call of Distress line "Alone, days in my room alone", I thought it was "Alone, dazed in my room, alone". PS: "I might be lost in my hands, heartbroken" or whatever is written on the new CD liner...I think that's wrong. I think the "I might be lost and my hands are broken" is the corect phrasing" - I'ts my story and I'm sticking to it!

in clouds is it lost a lot of weight??? I used to think it was but the liner to the new CD is, "Lost all hideaway" "Over endowed"? too funny There's a girl that I sometimes care for with who thought the Real Man line was "You wanna rate me!" ...You know, like for a beauty contest or something? (She's 13)

Tooks, I totally agree with you on the "hands are broken" I have found a # of inconsistencies with what I hear and what is written. How about on Clouds, I think it's at the end the second verse, the insert says, "so sorry it's over now,go on back home" I hear "so sorry it's over now, come on back home" and at the beginning, its "I wish for more IN this life" not" OF "like like the lyrics say. I think they do it on purpose to keep us on our toes. Or maybe it's like assembly instructions, someone totally unrelated to the product is writing down what they think it sounds like. I am glad to have they lyrics to some of the songs tho. I was a bit off on a few things before!

Haha! I agree with your interpretations as well. As far as why the lyrics are written differently than what is sung...part of it might have to do with the fact that, when the guys perform, entire lines can change! --- The poor guy assigned to writing the lyrics might've asked the guys for some of the harder to distinguish words and guys just replied with what they felt they sung or what they would sing at this moment. I think you may be onto something there! Especially after reading/listening to some of the more recent interviews on their songwriting. Here I am, getting really deep messages from the music, and they are goof-in off using fill in stuff, do do do , cuz it sounds good and nothing else came to mind. I don't care. I still say they are sending out subliminal messages in the music to us. That's why we are all addicted. We identify with it!I still haven't found one thing they have done that I don't like or will skip over.

I think Marty likes to play with words ... "Know where to be found" is just as good as "nowhere to be found" ... also "My eyes can't see what is wrong with me" could also be "My eyes can't see. What is wrong with me?" After I read you're post I started noticing these things, too! Like in "Wait for No One" there's the line "Now I know how it feels to be solo" - solo could also = so low...

If you guys didn't read Leperpop during RS, you missed out on something truly hilarious! I laughed out loud reading them. They are friends of Marty and his brother Steve ... anyway, they have a review of the new CD up and it is worth a visit: leperpop.blogspot.com/This is an excerpt from that review about Straight as an Arrow. I hope it is okay to put this here. If not...moderators...you have my permission to chastise me and do whatever needs to be done. "And then there's Maude, I mean, Straight as an Arrow - the best song on the cd. Simply put, this song is an ass kicker. The phallic implications of this song are obvious. You can read about them in entirety in my next book, Oedipus Lovehammer. My favorite line is “kiss is like a handshake”, which is a blatant reference to the human male’s attitude that sex means nothing. Add to that the line “What about me, so what, so what” and we learn how the Lovehammers feel about the women they’ve known who questioned their own lack of orgasms with the Lovehammers responding accordingly, “so what”. Not all of us men feel that way, ladies. Some of us would love to help you out with your orgasms, but I really don’t know what I’m doing when it comes to that, and frankly, I’m a little tired."
